Prague, Czech Republic

The first city we visited, weary travellers though we were, was lovely and historic Prague. As a young Canadian who grew up with the notion that a century home was something to celebrate, one can imagine how blown away I was by the context of this place. During the course of our walking and bus tours, I frequently overheard, and said myself, things like "oh, that building is only Baroque". Imagine! ONLY from the 16th century! But, compared to Romanesque and Renaissance architecture dating from the 12th and 13th centuries, Baroque does rather pale in comparison. Below are but a few examples. Look closely at this building! Some of the windows were painted on. Many of Prague's buildings have been destroyed by war or fire over the years, and this is one trick for cheaper restoration. Notice also how the windows get smaller higher up on the building - classic renaissance design.
