Kusawa Lake, Yukon

The first stop on our field trip was to Kusawa Lake (pronounced KUsawa). Kusawa is about 2 hours southwest of Whitehorse along the Alaska Highway. It's a huge lake, running over 30 km long, north to south. We camped at the north end, at a Yukon territorial campsite that was very well kept. The first day and a half featured persistant rain which left us sitting in our vehicle listening to a whole lot of Fleetwood Mac. Thankfully the weather cleared and we managed to get out on the lake in our Zodiac to do some real work. We used a depth sounder to record depths of the lake in different locations, and also took temperature, oxygen and turbidity readings. We stayed at Kusawa for four nights.

Here are some images of this lake. Click on any image for a larger version.

Our camp site. My tent is the green one. Notice also the back of our monstorous vehicle, the "Queen Mary".

Here's our boat. As you can well imagine, navigating a 30km+ lake in this thing was a bit of an undertaking.

Me, all dressed up. It wasn't any too warm. The water was about 9°C at the surface. Naturally I swam anyway.
