Top 100 Country Songs of All Time
This list was taken from a poll at Country America magazine. The list was generated by readers and critics, counting only songs that appeared on both lists.
Midi versions of all songs were available at Jack's Midi Music where I found this list to start with, but it seems to have vanished into thin air.
Is this fair and accurate? I don't know... yet. But I did note certain trends. The top three are by current stars but the top ten is rounded out by three songs by Hank Williams Sr and two by Patsy Cline, proving that the poll was not biased to either old or new country. Also the range of dates, the top three notwithstanding, is very noticeable given that most (not all) country music coming out of Nashville nowadays is mass produced product rather than music.
I was surprised to see Good Ol' Boys by Waylon Jennings, known to most people as the theme tune to The Dukes of Hazzard, but it's a great tune so I'm not complaining. I would have expected a lot more Buck Owens and Dolly Parton but there's plenty of music that I've simply not heard of, so I'm not going to argue. The only thing I would be firm about is that Will the Circle Be Unbroken is way too far down the list.
I know a lot less about country than I do about heavy metal, but I'm learning. That my favourite songs by certain artists are the ones represented here is telling. I intend to use this list as a base to explore country music further than I've managed to so far.
